BMX Bits

BMX stands for Bicycle Motocross.

A Moto is a race, so if you hear someone say we are racing 4 moto’s you now know it means 4 races.

A Cruiser is a bike with 24 inch wheels.

Sprocket’s are riders 7 years and younger. (They are also parts on a bike.)

Ever wondered about the different coloured number plates?
Sprocket number plates are orange with black numbers.
Girls, 8 years and up riding a 20 inch bike, have blue plates with white numbers.
Boys, 8 years and up riding a 20 inch bike, have white plates with black numbers.
Cruiser’s have a red plate with white numbers.

Ever seen a plate that has letters beside the number?
These plates will be a major competition plate, for example a zone, state, national or world competition. They numbered from 1 to 8. Therefore a state finalist will have a Q beside the place number on the plate. So 1Q means this rider is the first place getter in the most recent Queensland State titles.

Queensland is divided into 4 zones, we are FNQ which stands for Far North Queensland (of course) and this zone incorporates all clubs as far south as the Burdekin Club (Ayr), West to Mt Isa and every club north of that line.
The other zones are NQ – North Queensland. C – Central and S – Southern.
Points in BMX two day and major competitions are scored thus.
1st place gets one point and 8th gets 8 points etc. So least points wins.

You’ll be sure to hear the term Deadman Final at some stage and so you can explain it to others, here’s its meaning.

When you or your child races in one of the many two days comps held in our zone, often there will be more than eight riders in each age group. So
there will be heats. Points will be accumulated throughout the competition, and at the end of the final moto every rider’s points will be added up and the eight lowest point scorers will go into a Deadman Final. It is called a Deadman because although you or your rider may have come first in every race so far, anything can happen (and usually does). So if you stack or get squeezed out…where you finish is where you finish.
Hence Deadman….DO OR DIE!

On the other hand if you or your child have 8 or less riders in your race the final is just an extra moto and the places are won by scoring the lest amount
of points.
